Week Six
Krashen, S. (1982). Principles and practice in second language acquisition. Oxford: Pergamon.
Reflections:
The journal article, Principles and Practices in Second Language Acquisition, investigated the acquisition of a second language. I found it to be very interesting and relevant for a new educator. The five central hypothesis were very detailed, and I had never considered most of the ideas within the thesis. I found that I learned a great deal of relevant information, especially with the final hypothesis the Affective Filter. This hypothesis focused on the variables related to motivation, self-confidence, a healthy self-image, and levels of anxiety. During my practicum, there were a couple of students who suffered from high anxiety. This, I am aware is a growing issue and needs to be treated with empathy, compassion, and support. It was very eye opening observing a grade seven student struggling with anxiety. I did my best to help the students and were in discussion with the school counselor and the student's parents. I wondered how to take the information from the journal article and use it to improve the wellness of my students for their success. Immediately I thought of providing students the big picture and where we were going for the lesson so this might reduce so anxiety. I also considered trying to incorporate collaboration amongst the students, so they felt like they were not alone and could help each other with the activities. Although, this is something that I am going to have to look deeper into to support my students.
