Edstrom, A. (n.d.). Preparing an L2 Role-play: How Students Manage L2
Deficits. Canadian Modern Language Review, 274-297.

Reflections:

I made a connection with this article and loved the whole concept of play-based learning.  I feel that this strategy takes a lot of pre-planning by the instructor. However, I see the benefits and will take this with me in the future.  I feel that role-playing provides an opportunity to make genuine connections with the material.  Students 'play' and unintentionally learning from playing.  I was surprised by the reading about the greatest obstacles from role-playing being grammar and vocabulary.  However, re-considering this I know understand the logic behind the obstacle. It is important for the instructor to provide detail support and background and provide even more scaffolding building up to the role-playing activities.  I also made the connection of providing feedback during class time so the students can improve their linguistic accuracy.  Again, I am making reference to formative feedback and assessment to support the individual's needs.  Another connection I made was with collaboration.  I feel this is important for students to learn and develop, and I could relate to these challenges referenced in the journal article.  Personalities, proficiency levels, and interactional styles were three challenges that I faced during my practicums.  I feel that the more opportunities for students to collaborate will improve their inter-personal skills, and they will have more success.
