The Wedge
Picture
The wedge is another important tool in the secret agent's spy games 'toolbox'. Wedges are simple machines that are usually made of wood or metal and has one thick end that tapers to a thin edge on one side.  The thin edge is often sharpened to a cutting, or splitting, edge.  As you will see during your investigations on wedges, they are very similar to inclined planes.  Be sure to note both their similarities and differences.

TOP SECRET ACTIVITIES
Picture
This is just one example of a wedge.  How is it being used and why is it being used in this way?
Go to the Secret Agent in-Training website:  MIKids to view how wedges can be disguised.
Next, you can review the video on wedges to find out how they are different than inclined planes, as well as ways they might be able to help you on a mission in the field.

Reflect...
Did you notice any similarities or differences between wedges and inclined planes, Secret Agent in-Training?  Where can you find either of them?  Reflect on what you have found while investigating these two simple machines.  How might you be able to use them while you are on a mission?  How might they work for and against you?  Write these thoughts in our 'Secret Agents Blog' for Simple Machines and in your Simple Machines notebook.
