The screw (or bolt) is the next important simple machine that a secret agent or scientist needs to know about. As screw is technically an inclined plane or thread, wrapped around a shift or rod, usually coming to a sharp point on one end. This should be an easy tool as you've already learned about rods and inclined planes... but be careful, these tricky tools are often hard to spot as they can often be hidden inside of, or used in combination with other machines.
Secret Video Clip
As you have already discovered secret agent, there are many similarities between wedges and inclined planes. But they also share some similarities with screws.
You can review this informational video to understand their similarities and differences. Be prepared to share this with others later.
Remembering to reflect on assignments and missions is very important to a secret agent. Reflect on what you have found while investigating screws, as well as levers, inclined planes and wedges. What have you noticed about these four simple machines? Where are great places to use screws and why? Are there materials that are better to use to make screws? Materials that don't work well? Why? Write these thoughts both in our 'Secret Agents Blog' for Simple Machines and in your Simple Machines notebook.
