THE PULLEY

This last simple machine is the most complex and works well when you need to lift or lower heavy objects. A pulley is an object with a groove, like a wheel, that has a rope cord, or chain running through the groove. A pulley changes the direction of the input force. There are three types of pulleys; the fixed pulley, the moveable pulley and the combined pulley. Although very similar to a wheel and axle, it's not the same. Can you spot the difference?
Top Secret Activities
You definitely need to practice with pulleys. In order to do this, watch either of the top secret videos, then visit MIKids and explore the various examples of pulleys.

Create your own
Before you move on to the activities and quiz page, you will need to test yourself to be sure that you not only can spot a pulley, but you can make one of your own. When you are satisfied that you can demonstrate your own pulley, either take a picture, a video, or sketch a scientific diagram of it. Which of the three types is it and why did you choose that design? Don't forget to describe it and it's parts.
Reflect...
As this is the last simple machine for you to investigate, your writing in both the 'Secret Agent Blog' and in your Simple Machines notebook, should reflect on all that you have learned about these six simple tools and from exploring this section? What successes and challenges have you encountered? Be sure to explain in detail so that others can agree, disagree, or add to your comments and ideas in the blog.
